Empowering the Young Cricketers of Khayelitsha
At Lady Talk Matters, we believe that knowledge is power, especially when it comes to understanding our own bodies. That belief was on full display recently in a vibrant, sun-drenched session in Khayelitsha, where we had the absolute privilege of partnering with The CATCH Trust to speak with their talented girls’ cricket teams.
The day was filled with energy, curiosity, and the sound of barriers breaking. Rosh Koch, alongside the wonderful Lunathi, led a powerful and open conversation about puberty and menstrual health—topics too often shrouded in silence. For these young athletes, who train hard and play with passion, this wasn’t just a biology lesson; it was a masterclass in how to harness their own bodies to perform at their best.
The session, held for the brilliant young women of The CATCH Trust Cricket program, was a resounding success. The atmosphere was one of trust and openness, creating a safe space for the girls to ask questions and share their experiences without hesitation.
Rosh and Lunathi dove into all things periods, demystifying the process of puberty and menstruation. A key focus of the discussion was the menstrual cycle itself, breaking it down into its distinct phases. The girls learned not just what happens during their cycle, but why it happens. We explored:
- The Menstrual Phase: The start of the cycle.
- The Follicular Phase: When the body prepares for ovulation and energy levels can begin to rise.
- The Ovulation Phase: The release of an egg, often corresponding with peak energy and strength.
- The Luteal Phase: The time leading up to a period, where symptoms like fatigue or PMS can occur.
The most powerful connection was made when we linked these phases directly to the cricket pitch. The girls were fascinated to learn how understanding their cycle could be a secret weapon in their athletic pursuits. We discussed how energy is often highest during the follicular and ovulatory phases (approximately days of a typical cycle), making it a great time for intense training and big matches. Conversely, we talked about how to listen to your body and adapt during the luteal and menstrual phases (approximately days ), perhaps focusing on strategy, skill refinement, or restorative activities to manage fatigue and cramps.
The feedback from the girls and the organisers at The CATCH Trust was overwhelmingly positive. There was a clear sense of empowerment as the girls realised that their period wasn’t a handicap, but a natural rhythm that, when understood, could unlock a new level of body literacy and athletic potential.
We left Khayelitsha feeling incredibly inspired by the enthusiasm and intelligence of these future cricket stars. They are not just learning to play a sport; they are learning to lead, to be confident, and to champion their own health.
A huge thank you to The CATCH Trust for their vital work in the community and for inviting us to be a part of it. This successful session is a testament to what can be achieved when we talk openly and honestly.
Because at Lady Talk Matters, we know that every girl deserves the knowledge to play, lead, and thrive—on and off the cricket pitch.
